Berlin {Day 3}
1:26 PM
We woke up with intentions of going to Alexanderplatz which is one of the main transportation stations with lots of shopping and restaurants right by the TV Tower. When we got there we decided to try and find the East Side Gallery. While we had seen parts of the wall on our tour previously, we thought it might be cool to see the art on the wall. And it was so worth it, the stories behind the art are amazing. While many of the sections are sanctioned off with gates, some don't have any gates which has led to a lot of graffiti and writing over the murals. There is graffiti literally everywhere you go in Berlin.
After this we decided to go back to Alexanderplatz and then make our way to Hitler's Bunker. We had a pretty good grasp of the transportation by this point so knew how to get most places just by looking on the map. Once we got to that train station, it was just a short walk to where the Bunker once was. As we were there an english speaking tour guide was explaining to the people on his tour about the bunker. We stopped to listen and realized that we were already there. We both expected there to be a plaque or museum type thing with pictures but there was absolutely nothing, it looked just as if it was a normal part of Berlin. The tour guide did say that the entire bunker was destroyed for fear that people would idolize it and use it as a meeting ground.
We decided to stop for some lunch at the station and ordered from a random little stand called Ditsch. We both ordered pizza and a pretzel to share. We figured we had to try a pretzel while in Germany and it was soooo good (and only 75 pence, crazy cheap!).
After this we got back on the bus and shortly decided to go to the Berlin Olympic Stadium. We decided to take a guided tour and it was absolutely amazing. The stories our tour guide told were so interesting about the olympics and the building of the stadium as well as renovations. The men's 2006 world cup was also held here and the women's 2011 world cup which was so cool to me knowing such amazing players have played here. We were able to go on the VIP balcony where presidents and chancellors have sat. Our guide also said that the VIP balcony was shortened to eliminate the seat where Hitler sat. She also talked a lot about Jesse Owens because there is a floor in the stadium named in honor of him which was very cool. (Sorry about the crooked pics, I have no clue how to edit the go pro ones. Ill figure it out eventually lol.)
Then we went back to the main station, did a little bit of shopping. I bought Birks (yayy!) before heading back to our flat, having some wine (which as we were drinking, read on the bottle that it was from California, whoops haha) and german apple beer (made in Hamburg). And here our pictures of our flat from the airbnb site. It was a very cool pace to stay!
Then it was time to pack up our bags and go to bed and get a couple hours of sleep before waking up at 3am for our flight to Amsterdam!
What a perfect three days spent in Berlin. We were able to see everything we wanted to and really get a feel for this amazing city. Onto the next adventure!
